PERTUSSIS OUTBREAK - PLEASE READ

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), Immunization Division (IMM), is investigating a  PERTUSSIS OUTBREAK in your school.  Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory disease and notifiable disease in Alabama.  IMM staff is calling parents this week from 5:00-7:00 PM to find out if your student(s) have symptoms and to educate you to help prevent others from getting the disease.

Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After fits of many coughs, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths which result in a "whooping" sound. Pertussis can affect people of all ages, but can be very serious, even deadly, for babies less than a year old.  The best way to protect against pertussis is by getting vaccinated.

If you or someone you know has early symptoms usually include, runny nose, low-grade fever, mild, occasional cough, apnea or late stage symptoms which include paroxysms (fits) of many, rapid coughs followed by a high-pitched "whoop", vomiting (throwing up) during or after coughing fits, or exhaustion (very tired) after coughing fits. Please go to a doctor and tell them you may have been exposed to pertussis, and contact Phyllis Coughran at 256-315-4863 or Immunization Division at immunization@adph.state.al.us.  If you email, please include your name and phone.

SchoolBlocks offers a unique and powerful personalized search system. A member of the public, searching for "homework" might see an announcement from the school as the first result. However, if the user is logged in, they would see their teacher’s latest homework assignment as the top result.
